This article describes the actions that a Moodle user with the role Teacher (editor) can perform with the Compilatio plugin for Moodle version 3.
The different versions of the plugin are listed in the article https://support.compilatio.net/hc/articles/360019664658.
1. Prerequisites
A Moodle administrator must first have installed and enabled the Compilatio plugin on your Moodle instance to be able to reproduce the actions described in this article. Please refer to the article https://support.compilatio.net/hc/articles/360000735809 to install the plugin.
2. File and content constraints
For a file to be analyzed by the Compilatio plugin, it must meet the following criteria:
- File size must be less than or equal to 100 MB
- The text of the document must contain between 100 and 300,000 words.
- The file format must be one of the following : xml, txt, tex, csv, html, htm, xhtml, pdf, rtf, doc, docx, xls, xlsx, ppt, pptx, odt, ods, odp, numbers, keyorzip
If these criteria are not met, one of the messages below will be displayed.
- When the document does not contain enough words to be analyzed :
- When the document contains more words than the allowed limit :
- When the file exceeds the authorized size :
- If the file format is not supported by Compilatio :
3. Types of activity that can use the Compilatio plugin
The Compilatio plugin can be used in Moodle activities such as Assignment, Workshop, Forum and Quiz :
The Moodle administrator can choose whether or not to activate the plugin for each of these activity types.
Activate the plugin in an activity type to access the form Compilatio plagiarism plugin in the activity parameters, and of course to use the Compilatio service in the activity concerned. Below is an image showing the section containing the plugin's parameter form, in the activity parameters:
The default values for this form can be set in the plugin's administration area, accessible to Moodle administrators. For each new activity created as part of the activity types authorized to use the Compilatio plugin, the plugin is configured with the default values defined by the administrator.
4. Activating and deactivating the plugin in an activity
You can enable or disable the use of the Compilatio plugin in a specific activity by modifying the value of the parameter Allow suspicious texts detection with Compilatio in the parameters of the activity concerned:
5. Choice of default indexing status for documents loaded into an activity
In the Compilatio plagiarism plugin activity parameters, you can choose the default indexing status of the documents to be loaded into this activity.
When the Add documents into the Document Database is set to Yes, the documents loaded in this activity will be added to the Compilatio document database when they are loaded. In other words, they will be indexed and used as comparison material in Magister(+) analyses. When set to No, the documents loaded remain confidential compared with document analyses.
6. Sending documents to Compilatio
The plugin is activated before loading documents
In an activity for which the Compilatio plugin is already activated, uploaded documents are automatically sent to the Compilatio account of the teacher who created the activity.
If the activity is reused or imported, the documents can be uploaded to the Compilatio account attached to the Moodle platform.
The plugin is activated after loading the documents
In an activity, when the plugin is activated after the documents have been uploaded, the documents are not automatically sent to Compilatio. You must perform this action by clicking on the "paper plane" button in the Compilatio frame at the top of the page, to send all documents that have not been sent in this activity:
You can also choose to send each document individually by clicking on the same icon, but in the Compilatio frame relating to the document:
7. Change the indexing status of a document
The indexing status of a document indicates whether it is currently indexed or not. When a document is added to the reference library, it is indexed and used as comparison material for Magister(+) analyses.
You can change the indexing status of a document by clicking on the "books" icon representing the document's indexing status.

8. Analysis modes
Document analyses can be requested in three different ways: Direct, Manual and Scheduled. In the Compilatio plagiarism plugin section of an activity's settings, you can choose the analysis launch mode with the setting Analysis start:
Direct analysis launch mode
When the Analysis start setting is set to the value Direct, the document analysis request is made immediately after the document has been loaded into the activity, without any explicit request on your part.
This analysis mode does not allow cross-comparisons to be made between documents in the same activity, as the first document loaded, and therefore analyzed, has no knowledge of the documents that will be loaded subsequently in the same activity. You must use the Manual or Scheduled launch modes to perform cross-comparisons between documents in the same activity.
This analysis mode can be deactivated in the plugin's administration section. The intervention of a Moodle administrator is required if you wish to use this analysis mode and it is not visible in the drop-down menu.
Manual analysis launch mode
Manual analysis launch mode let you decide when you want to analyse documents loaded in the activity.
You can request analysis of a single document by clicking on the Analyse related to the document concerned :
And you can request analyses of all the documents loaded in the activity by clicking on the ▶ visible in the Compilatio frame at the top of the page:
Scheduled analysis launch mode
Analysis launch mode Scheduled allows you to select a date from which document analyses will be requested in an activity. If a document is loaded into the activity after the set date, its analysis will be requested automatically after loading.
The trigger date for analysis requests is defined by the setting Analysis date (scheduled analysis only) in the Compilatio plagiarism plugin section of the activity's settings :
The status Analysis planned is then visible for documents loaded before the analysis trigger date:
9. Document analysis
When a document analysis request is sent to Compilatio, the status In the queue is assigned to the document until the resources needed to process the analysis are available on Compilatio servers:
When the analysis process has started, the status Analysis in progress is assigned to the document :
10. Analysis time
The duration of a document analysis, i.e. the time between the analysis request and the moment when the analysis report is available, can be broken down into three parts:
- Time spent in queue, waiting for the necessary resources on the Compilatio platform servers. This time depends on the state of the platform at the time of the analysis request.
- The actual analysis time, which is just a few minutes for most of the documents analyzed.
- The result retrieval time, which corresponds to the time interval between the end of the analysis and the moment when the plugin retrieves the result. The frequency with which analysis scores are retrieved can be set by a Moodle administrator.
11. Analysis scores
The overall analysis score, or Suspicious texts score, is displayed in the Compilatio frame linked to the document when the analysis is complete and the plugin has retrieved the results for that document. The rate of Suspicious texts visible in the example below is 100%:
You can obtain details of the composition of the overall score by hovering the mouse over the icons displayed to the right of the score. These icons represent the types of scores that make up the rate of Suspicious texts:
-
Similarity score
-
Unrecognized languages score
-
AI detection score
The color of each score type and of the overall score is defined by the color thresholds defined in the Compilatio plagiarism plugin section of the activity's settings, using the Limits setting:
12. Score type filtering
The plugin lets you filter the analysis results displayed by score type. For example, you can display only the rate of similarities found, or only the rate of text potentially generated by AI.
This feature can be accessed by clicking on the "cogwheel" icon in the Compilatio frame at the top of the page, in the Display settings for scores:
Once the form has been validated, the analysis results are automatically updated with the defined filter. Score types that have not been checked in the Display settings for scores panel are noted as Excluded from the score and their icon is crossed out:
13. Access to analysis report
You can access a document's analysis report by clicking on the Report button. This opens a new tab in the browser, displaying the document's analysis report.
Analysis reports for a Moodle activity are available to all teachers with access to this activity, as well as to Moodle platform administrators.
14. Visibility of results for students
You can choose to make analysis results visible to students who have loaded a document into the activity. The plugin allows two levels of visibility:
- See the rate of Suspicious texts only
- View the rate of Suspicious texts and access the read-only analysis report (or certificate of analysis)
Modify the visibility of the Suspicious texts score for students
In the Compilatio plagiarism plugin section of the activity's settings, use the Show suspicious texts score to student to determine whether the score of Suspicious texts will be visible to students:
Make the report or certificate of analysis available to students in read-only mode
To make analysis reports or certificates available to students, this permission must be enabled in the plugin's administration section. When this option is not enabled, the settings described below are not available in the Compilatio plagiarism plugin section of the activity's settings.
Two parameters configure the read-only availability of the analysis report or certificate for students. The first setting is labelled Show analysis report to student:
The second setting, Report available for students allows you to decide which type of document (PDF file) will be downloaded when you click on the Report button, either the analysis report or the analysis certificate:
15. Types of scores in analysis results
Compilatio offers a range of services for performing analyses with different types of results. You can find out which scores will be included in the analysis results by clicking on the "question mark" icon in the Compilatio frame at the top of the page:
16. Statistics
Statistics on the use of the plugin in this activity can be accessed by clicking on the "statistics" icon in the Compilatio frame at the top of the page:
17. Find the depositor of a document
In an analysis report, when a source of similarities appears with the mention Comes from my database or Comes from my group, the identity of the submitter of this source document may be stored in the database of your Moodle platform, and therefore accessible to the Compilatio plugin installed on this platform.
You can search for information on the depositor of the source document by entering the 40-characters document identifier in the search field accessible by clicking on the "magnifying glass" icon visible in the Compilatio frame displayed at the top of the page:
This search tool can be deactivated in the plugin's administration section. In this case, the "magnifying glass" icon is not visible in the Compilatio frame at the top of the page.
18. Notifications
The "bell" icon in the Compilatio frame at the top of the page gives you access to Compilatio notifications:
